A Welcome Note From The Sunday Morning Transport

A beginning is a very delicate time.

Hello everyone, welcome to The Sunday Morning Transport — the newsletter dedicated to bringing you a great speculative short story each Sunday. I'm Julian Yap, Editor in Chief.

Because our goal is to keep the focus on each story, I’ll keep this, and future editor's notes brief — often just giving you a quick glimpse of what you can expect in the weeks to come. This month, as we start out, I'll also share a few details about how The Sunday Morning Transport works, and our goals.

Starting this Sunday, January 9, we will bring a great science fiction or fantasy short story right to your inbox. Our stories are intended to be short enough to enjoy with your morning coffee or on your commute, while also taking you somewhere new, blowing your mind, and encouraging you to look at the world in a different way. Whether the stories are hard SF, epic fantasy, and anything in between or beyond, I hope you'll come away from each story saying “that was the best thing I’ve read all week.” They say good writing entertains, and great writing surprises, and we promise you that we’ll always aim for great. 

In this first month of our run, we’re making every story free to read. Starting in February, the first story of each month will be free -- and emailed to all members, paid subscribers and free readers alike. The rest of the month's stories will be available to paid subscribers.  We do hope you'll join us in building a strong subscriber base. In doing so, you'll be supporting the writers, artists, copy editors, proofreaders, and editors who put this newsletter together, week in and week out. So what’s in store for January? This Sunday, we launch The Sunday Morning Transport with Max Gladstone’s “To Make Unending” — an epic fantasy, of sorts. January 16 will bring “Legend” by Karen Lord — a short tale about nation building and justice. On January 23, you'll read Juan Martinez’s darkly funny “A Subscriber’s Only Sneak Peek into the Preliminary Reports on the Conditions of the Camps.”  And we'll close out January with Kat Howard’s brilliant and beautiful “Telling the Bees.” It's going to be a great month for new fiction.

With that, I would like to thank this month’s authors, and our editorial and production staff, including copyeditor Kaitlin Severini, proofreader Delia Davis, and managing editor Fran Wilde, for embarking on this journey with me.
